Starting a business online in Costa Rica
What the relocation blogs leave out: the domain, the website, the Google profile, the payment methods that actually get used here, and what all of it really costs.
- Costa Rican team since 2020
- We work in English
- Everything ends up in your name
- No legal or tax advice
What this page is, and what it is not
If you have moved to Costa Rica or invested in something here, you have probably already found the lawyers and the relocation forums. They cover the company structure, the residency and the taxes. Almost nobody covers the part you will spend the most time on afterwards: getting the business found and paid online, in a country whose habits are not the ones you are used to.
We are not lawyers or accountants, and nothing here is legal or tax advice. For the corporate structure, the residency and anything Hacienda-related, use a professional who carries that liability. What follows is the digital side, which is what we do every day.
Seven things to do, in this order
Register the domain in your own name
Before anything else, and with your email as the owner contact. The single most common mess we are called in to fix is a business that cannot touch its own domain because it lives in an account belonging to whoever built the first site. Buy the .com; add the .co.cr as well if your buyers are local.
Get email on your own domain
you@yourbusiness.com, not a Gmail address with the business name in it. It costs a few dollars a month and it changes how a supplier, a bank or a landlord reads your first message. Set it up properly with SPF, DKIM and DMARC or your invoices will land in spam, which is a problem that hides for months.
Build the website before you advertise
Paid traffic landing on a weak page is the fastest way to lose money here. The site needs to load quickly on a phone on mobile data, say plainly what you sell and where, and put a way to contact you on every screen. In this country that means WhatsApp, visible and one tap away.
Claim the Google Business Profile
For anything with customers in a specific place, this outranks the website in the first months. Fill the services list with the words people actually type, post something weekly, add photos every month and answer every review. Almost nobody does the services list, and it is the field that decides which searches show you.
Sort out payments and invoicing together
Cards and SINPE Móvil for local customers, an international gateway if you sell abroad, and electronic invoicing connected to whatever your accountant uses. Decide these before the store is built, not after: retrofitting a payment method is where budgets quietly double.
Answer faster than your competitors
The bar in Costa Rica is low and that is your opening. An enquiry answered in minutes beats a better-looking competitor who replies the next morning. If you cannot be on the phone all day, an AI agent can hold the conversation, quote and book at three in the morning and hand you only what matters.
Start the slow work on day one
Ranking on Google takes months, so the month to start is this one. Write the pages for what you sell and for where you sell it, in both languages, and let them age while the ads carry the short term. Businesses that start SEO after a year of ads always wish they had done it the other way around.
Five mistakes we watch foreigners make here
1. Building for the wrong customer
A site written entirely in English, for a business whose suppliers, staff and half its buyers are Costa Rican. Or the reverse: a Spanish-only site for a hotel whose guests all book from North America. Decide who pays you before deciding what language the site speaks, and if the answer is both, publish both — written for each reader, not run through a translator.
2. Assuming email is how people reply
It is not. Business in Costa Rica happens on WhatsApp, including quotes, bookings and invoices. A contact form that sends an email nobody checks is a form that loses customers. Put WhatsApp where a thumb can reach it and answer it like a phone line.
3. Paying North American prices out of habit
A professional website starts around $499 here and the work is the same work. If you are quoted five thousand dollars for a brochure site, you are paying for an address, not for code. The opposite error is just as expensive: the cheapest possible site, rebuilt a year later because it cannot be found on Google and cannot be edited by you.
4. Ignoring the Google profile for months
It is free, it appears above the website on a phone, and it is the first thing a nearby customer sees. Most businesses here fill in the name and the phone number and never open it again. In the study we ran on 100 Costa Rican websites (in Spanish), the same neglect showed up everywhere: 68% had no visible WhatsApp or phone, 51% had never written a meta description. The bar is genuinely this low.
5. Letting someone else hold the keys
The domain in the designer's account. The hosting on a reseller plan you cannot log into. The ad account owned by the agency. Each one is fine until the relationship ends, and then it costs money and weeks. Everything we build ends up in your name — site, domain, accounts and database — and that is in writing before we start.
What it costs to get online here
Rough numbers so you can budget, not a quote. A domain is a few dollars a year and business email a few dollars a month per address. A professional website starts at $499 and a full online store at the same point, depending on the catalogue. SEO starts at $500 as a project. Ads are separate: you pay Google or Meta directly and the management is a flat monthly fee.
The expensive decision is almost never the build. It is whether the thing you built can be found, edited and kept. A site that has to be replaced in a year costs more than the one that was done properly the first time, and by then you have also lost the year.
Where your customers are, and where we work
We work remotely across the whole country and in English throughout. There are pages of their own for the places where most of the foreign business community is — from Tamarindo and Nosara to Escazú, Santa Teresa and Puerto Viejo — and the full list is on the web design page.
Frequently asked questions
Should I register a .com or a .co.cr domain?
Buy the .com if it is available, and add the .co.cr pointing at it if your customers are Costa Rican. A .co.cr signals local to a local buyer, but it does nothing for a traveler booking from abroad and it is harder to say over the phone. Whichever you choose, register it in your own name, not your web designer under their account.
Do I need a website if I already have Instagram and a Google profile?
A Google Business Profile alone will get you found on the map, and for some very local businesses that is enough to start. You need a website the moment people want to compare before contacting you, or the moment you want to show up for what you sell rather than for your own name. A profile with no site behind it also converts worse, because there is nothing to read.
Is electronic invoicing really mandatory?
Yes. Issuing facturas electronicas in the format the tax authority requires is a normal part of operating a business in Costa Rica, and it is the item foreigners are most often surprised by. We are not accountants and will not advise you on tax — but we do connect your website, store or system to whatever invoicing software you and your accountant choose.
What payment methods do I actually need here?
Card payments, and SINPE Movil. SINPE Movil is a bank transfer between phone numbers that a large part of the country uses for everyday amounts, and leaving it out costs you real sales. If you also sell to buyers abroad, you need an international gateway alongside it — they are different problems and the store should handle both.
How much should a small business expect to spend to get online?
A domain and business email run a few dollars a month. A professional site starts around $499 here, an online store the same, and SEO from $500 as a project. Compare that with the United States or Europe, where the same work is routinely quoted at five times as much. The cost that bites later is not the build, it is a cheap site that has to be rebuilt in a year.
Can I run the business in English only?
Only if every single customer is a foreigner, and that is rarer than it looks. Even businesses in Tamarindo or Escazu sell to Costa Rican suppliers, staff and neighbours. The pragmatic answer is to publish in both languages from the start, with each version written for its reader rather than translated, because the two audiences search for different things.
How long does the digital side take?
A domain and email are the same day. A straightforward website is three to seven working days once we have your content. A Google Business Profile takes a few days of verification and then months of maintenance to be worth anything. Ranking for what you sell is the slow one and it is measured in months, which is why it should start on day one, not after everything else.
