Mobile app development in Costa Rica
Apps for your customers or for your team in the field — built around what the business has to do, not around a template. And we will tell you when you do not need one.
- US central time zone
- We work in English
- The code is yours
- Costa Rican team since 2020
First, the part that costs us the project
Most businesses that ask for an app do not need one. An app only earns its place when people come back to it on their own several times a month, when it needs the camera, the GPS or push notifications, or when your crew works somewhere with no signal.
If what you actually need is for customers to find you, understand what you sell and get in touch, a fast website does that better and costs a fraction. Nobody downloads an app to buy once. We say this before quoting, because an app nobody opens is the most expensive silence in software.
Three ways to build it, honestly compared
Progressive web app (PWA) — the one nobody offers you
A website that installs from a link. It gets an icon on the phone, opens full screen with no browser bar, works without signal and updates itself the moment we publish. There is no App Store, no Play Store, no review that can reject your release, no cut of your sales and no yearly developer fee.
For internal tools, bookings, catalogues, dashboards and anything your own team uses, it does what a native app would at a fraction of the cost. It is the smallest project of the three, which is exactly why most shops never bring it up. Our own CRM work ships this way: the salesperson opens an icon, it works in a warehouse with no signal, and it updates itself.
Cross-platform — one codebase, both phones
Android and iOS from a single codebase. You pay once instead of twice, both versions stay in step, and a fix lands on both the same day. For the large majority of business apps — bookings, ordering, delivery, loyalty, field reporting — this is the right answer and the difference from native is something users never notice.
Native — when the app is the product
Separate builds for each platform. It is worth the double cost when the app lives or dies on heavy graphics, deep hardware access, or being first to use a platform feature the week it launches. If someone recommends native for a booking app, ask them why.
The costs that are missing from most quotes
- Store fees. Apple charges a developer fee every year; Google Play charges once. Both exist whether the app makes money or not.
- Review. Every release goes through a human review that can reject it, and that rejection is not always predictable. It changes how you plan launches.
- Commission. If you sell digital goods inside the app, the store takes a cut — commonly 15% to 30%.
- The operating systems move twice a year. An app with no maintenance budget stops working properly within about eighteen months. Not maybe: reliably.
- Push notifications, analytics and crash reporting need setting up and watching, or you find out about a crash from a one-star review.
We put every one of these in writing before you commit. A project that runs out of money three months after launch is a bad outcome for both sides, and we have seen it enough times to price it in from the start.
Why companies hire in Costa Rica
This country has been the nearshore destination for US companies for two decades, and the reason is not mysterious:
- The time zone. Costa Rica runs on US central time. A nine o'clock stand-up in Texas is nine o'clock here. Compare that with a team twelve hours away, where every question costs you a day.
- The language. The work happens in English — the calls, the documents, the code comments and the handover.
- The rate. A fraction of a US agency for the same work, and no offshore surprise where the price was the only thing that was cheap.
- Distance. Direct flights from most US hubs, if the project ever needs someone in a room.
What we build
- Customer apps: bookings, ordering, delivery tracking, loyalty, memberships.
- Field apps: route sheets, inspections with photos, signatures, stock counts — working offline and syncing when signal returns.
- Internal tools: approvals, quoting, dashboards, anything currently living in a spreadsheet somebody guards.
- Integrations with what you already run: your CRM or ERP, your online store, payments, and Costa Rican electronic invoicing if you operate here.
How we work
A written scope with price and timeline before anything starts. Then the shortest version that is genuinely useful, in front of real users in two to four months, growing from what they actually do rather than from what the kickoff meeting imagined. Progress by link, not by status report.
On final payment the code, the database and the store accounts go in your name and the repository is handed over. Keep the maintenance with us or take it anywhere — an agency that keeps the code is keeping you.
We work remotely across the country, and these areas have a page of their own in English: Escazú, Santa Ana, San José, Tamarindo, Nosara and Jacó — the full list is on the web design page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I actually need an app?
Probably not, and we would rather say so now. An app earns its keep when people come back on their own several times a month, when it needs the camera, GPS or push notifications, or when your team works offline in the field. If what you need is for customers to find you, read what you sell and get in touch, a fast website does that better and costs a fraction. An app nobody opens is the most expensive silence in software.
What is a progressive web app, and why do you keep suggesting it?
A PWA is a website that installs from a link: it gets an icon on the phone, opens full screen with no browser bar, works without signal and updates itself. No App Store, no Play Store, no review process, no 15 to 30 percent cut of your sales, no yearly developer fees. For internal tools, booking systems, catalogues and dashboards it does everything a native app would, and it is the cheapest of the three options. Most shops never mention it because it is the smallest project.
Native or cross-platform?
Cross-platform for most business apps: one codebase that ships to Android and iOS, so you pay once instead of twice and both versions stay in step. Native when the app lives or dies on heavy graphics, deep hardware access or platform features the day they launch. We tell you which one your case is before quoting, not after.
What does it cost, and what are the costs nobody mentions?
The build is the part everyone quotes. The parts they leave out: the Apple developer account is a yearly fee, Google Play has a one-off one, both stores review every release and can reject it, and the operating systems break things twice a year — an app with no maintenance budget stops working within about eighteen months. We put all of that in writing before you commit, because a project that runs out of money after launch helps nobody.
Why hire in Costa Rica instead of the US or Asia?
Time zone and language. Costa Rica runs on US central time, so a stand-up at nine in the morning in Texas is nine in the morning here — not a reply that lands while you sleep. The team works in English. And the rate is a fraction of a US agency for the same work. That is what nearshore means in practice, and it is why so much of it ended up in this country.
Who owns the code?
You do. On final payment the code, the database and the store accounts go in your name, and the repository is handed over. You can keep the maintenance with us or take it anywhere. An agency that keeps the code is keeping you.
How long does it take?
A focused first version is usually two to four months, and that is on purpose: it ships the shortest thing that is genuinely useful, gets it in front of real users, and grows from what they actually do. Projects that try to launch everything at once take a year and launch the wrong thing.
